Jarvis Street Baptist Church

I chose to include this building after visiting for Doors Open in 2023. There is a nice large light fixture inside that has the appearance of a rose window, as well as a beautiful wooden organ screen. I thought these would be nice to include in the border. The exterior of the building features a tower with an ornamented spire and a U-shaped roof to accommodate the rose window light fixture.

As usual, the drawing began with a complete circuit of the ground floor plan, and then starting to draw vertical lines up from each corner (see Figure 1). The U-shaped roof presented some challenges that I hadn’t really encountered before. The University College perspective drawing included a round building, but this one had tiers that tapered and then led down to a rectangular base with slanted roof (see Figure 2).

Once all the walls, buttresses, doors and ornamentation were drawn in using pencil, I started adding in the details using ink. The next few images show this process.

When all of the detail and shadow rendering for the building was completed, I started the border. As mentioned before, I wanted to include the organ screen which appears at the bottom of the border (Figure 6). I included the rose window as quarter-rounds in the corners. I’ve shown it sketched with a separate study I did in Figure 7.
